Courier News Obituary Index

obit

The Courier News donated its obituary files to Plainfield Public Library in 2009. These articles were clipped and indexed by the Courier News staff during the mid-1920s to the mid-1980s.  However, many thousands of published obituaries were not clipped and so will not be found in the index.   Areas included are predominantly Plainfield and its surrounding communities, eastern Somerset County, and northern Hunterdon County.

The clippings are now being indexed by a very dedicated library volunteer.  Although this is only a partial index, the library is making it available for the benefit of researchers and genealogists who regularly access our resources.  The index will be updated and posted to the website as it becomes available.

Due to the delicate condition of most of the clippings, they often cannot be photocopied. Requests for clippings contained in the files must be located on Courier News microfilm. In some cases articles cannot be found in the microfilm, because of an incorrect or missing date or because a clipping listed was not from the Courier News [Clipping (nonCN)]. If you are having difficulty locating an obituary, please contact the Local History Dept. at 908-757-1111 ext. 136. If you would like to request that a copy be made for you, even if the name does not appear in the index, please see below.

The Obituary Files have been indexed. Click HERE to open a PDF file of the complete index, A to Z.

An additional collection of similar files will be added once indexing is complete.

You will need to download a free Adobe Reader to view and search the index.
Once a file is open, click CTRL+F to search.
